Cold Weather Policy
With the Polar Vortex upon us and bringing frigid temperatures, please send students in winter coats, hats, and mittens. Our goal is to go outside for a mask break as often as possible. The children need the opportunity to get some fresh air and run around. We will consider both temperature and wind chill when making the decision about mask breaks. Please note that as a general rule, if the “feels like” temperature is 0 or higher, we will most likely be going outside.
Common Writing Assessment (Fifth Grade)
The Common Writing Assessment (CWA) will be administered to all Madison hybrid and remote fifth grade students on February 11 and 12. The CWA is one component utilized in sixth grade placement for Enriched Language Arts (ELA) and Affective Cognitive Enrichment (ACE) classes for the fall of 2021.
The Common Writing Assessment is:
-Designed as a pre-assessment by William & Mary University
-Measures prerequisite skills necessary to be successful in the middle school ELA and ACE courses
-Aligned to Common Core State Standards for writing and for literature. The rubric assesses each student’s ability to use claim and opinion writing, support, elaboration, and conclusion.
The CWA is an in-person assessment. Students will be administered the assessment in two parts which will be administered over the course of two days. Students have the option of typing or handwriting the assessment. The assessment will be scored by multiple teachers from grades five and six. Once all student work from the Common Writing Assessment is scored, your child’s score will be communicated via Skyward.
