PTO Committee Descriptions

The Madison PTO has many committees that work to enhance our students learning, fundraise and build community. Committee Descriptions for a typical school year are below. 

Art Awareness Present various artists and art forms in the classroom one time per year in kindergarten, twice per year in 1st-5th grade and assist the students with an art project in the style of the artist.  All presentations, materials and supplies are provided
Art Awareness Coordinators Coordinate the presentation date(s) with the grade level teachers and volunteers. Gather and distribute supplies to the volunteers
Book Fair Assist with Setting up and taking down of Book Fair in the Fall and help to sell books at the Fair.  Chairs organize fair with vendor to raise money to purchase books, software, and supplies for student use
Community Holiday Gifts Community Holiday Gifts (CHG) is the largest recurring community outreach program at Madison.  In partnership with HSC Family Services, Madison families fulfill the wish lists of dozens of children in our community.   CHG organizes this undertaking beginning in October and delivers over 200 wrapped presents plus grocery gift cards the first Saturday in December.  Many volunteer opportunities are available on this committee depending on your interests, whether behind the scenes/administrative or working directly with students, HSC social workers, or recipient families.
Orange Ruler Our Fall school fundraiser will take place over 2 weeks in September. Will assist an outside organization, Orange Ruler, in executing the event.
Directory Work directly with on-line company and printer to help manage the process and distribute in September or October
Bike Rodeo 3rd and 4th grade parents strongly encouraged to volunteer and organize this event, which takes place within the first few weeks of school and is the kick-off to registering bikes for children to ride to school.
High Interest Day Help to plan an afternoon of enrichment classes for grades 3-5.  Chair coordinates the details of hosting presenters and volunteers.
Hospitality Plan teacher appreciation activities and recognize staff birthdays monthly
Hot Lunch Chairs coordinate hot lunch dates, select vendors, coordinate volunteer sign-ups, communicate ingredients lists, set up and oversee hot lunches throughout the year
House and Grounds Develop and implement landscape plans for Madison and perform light landscaping/gardening work to maintain grounds.  Work with landscape companies when necessary. Prepare seasonal planters for school entrances
Junior Great Books Coordinate the Junior Great Books program for grades 3-5.
Kids Care Club Facilitate the Madison School service club, using no-cost student ideas and parent ideas. This is a fun and rewarding club that helps the community, for grades 3-5.  Student grants are available from District 181 Foundation.
New Families and Kindergarten Welcome Coordinate events to welcome new Madison families in acclimating to both Madison and the Hinsdale community.
Newspaper Club Will work with grades 3-5 to produce a quarterly school newspaper/newsletter. This will likely be an after-school activity.
Parent Night Committee Plan the bi-annual (even years) Parents Night Fundraiser, secure auction items and help manage the event.  Chairs coordinate venue, vendors, and sponsors
Retirement Celebration Plan and coordinate events and gifts for retiring staff members
Room Parent Work with the teacher in your child’s classroom to organize holiday parties, field trip chaperones and other special events. Sign-ups will open in late August/early September, via the PTO eBlast
School Supplies Work with teachers to compile supply lists, coordinate with vendor to set up class-appropriate kits, launch on-line sale with parents.
Season of Science Coordinate and create a parent-run back-to-school STEAM event in early January and the annual all-school Science Fair in February
Spirit Wear Offer Madison spirit wear at school events throughout the year. Chair develops Madison product line coordinates orders with vendors.
Variety Show Organize and run the Madison student Variety Show in the spring
Yearbook Gather school group pictures and work with vendor to publish the annual yearbook
5th Grade Graduation Coordinate events to celebrate the 5th grade students.
Fall Movie Night Community Event Help coordinate movie in the park event.
Son/Parent Night Will coordinate a son/parent community event.
Daughter/Parent Night Will coordinate a daughter/parent community event.
Holiday Lights Walk Will organize the holiday lights celebration.
Field Day Coordinators Will work with teachers and volunteers to help coordinate the Field Day activities.
Sister School Chairs Coordinate PTO events with D181 and Sister School
D.A.R.E. Chair Will work with Hinsdale Police Department to organize the D.A.R.E. program and order the t-shirts for 5th graders.
